Chapter 6
Antonio forgot about the black parachutes by the next morning. Today was the day. Antonio had jumped with Brody several times. Brody would hold on to his arms during free fall. Then he would tell Antonio when to open his chute.
Today he was making his first solo jump. He couldnât wait to free fall alone! First he would check his altitude. Then he would open his own chute. This was the first step to becoming a skilled skydiver.
Antonio got to Thunderbirds early.
âGood morning, Antonio,â Brody said. âAre you excited for your big day?â
âYou bet,â Antonio answered.
âGreat! Weâll go up this afternoon. Why donât you clean out the plane hangar first?â Brody said.
Antonio passed Jax as he headed to the hangar. Jax gave Antonio a cold look.
Antonio cleaned the hangar fast. So Hunter asked Antonio to pick up some supplies from town.
Antonio turned on the car radio. Chief Callas was talking about the Jewelry Exchange burglary. Antonio was shocked to hear the chief âs latest theory. The police thought the burglars had escaped by parachuting off the roof!
âWe believe that skydivers were involved in the crime,â Chief Callas said. âThey may have used dark parachutes. There was no moon that night. No one would have seen them.â
Antonio was stunned. He thought about the black chutes heâd found. His mind raced. âWas it possible that Brody and Jax were the burglars?â Antonio thought.
An hour later, Antonio arrived back at the field. Brody was waiting for him.
âGet dressed now, Antonio. Then grab a chute from Jax. Itâs time for your jump,â Brody said.
Antonio walked into the hangar. Jax looked angry. He silently handed Antonio a chute. Brody and Hunter were waiting for him. They were ready. Hunter steered the plane down the runway. And Brody reviewed the jump again.
âWeâre going to jump from seven thousand feet. Youâll free fall for one thousand feet. Remember to spread your arms and legs. Check your altitude,â Brody said. âWhen you get to six thousand feet, open your chute. Got that?â
âGot it,â Antonio stated.
Ten minutes later, Hunter announced they were at seven thousand feet. Then Brody pulled the door open.
âOkay, Antonio. This is it,â said Brody.
Antonio jumped out of the plane. Excitement rushed over him as he fell through the air. It was the most thrilling thing heâd ever experienced! He checked his altitude. He was at 6,500 feet. A second later he opened his chute.
âThatâs funny,â Antonio thought. âIâm not slowing down.â
He looked up. He was shocked to see that his chute was tangled. There was nothing holding him up! Antonio had jumped out of the plane without a working parachute!
